The Computer Log #1 for October 28, 2009

My name is Franklin and I am a computer Geek who is not a 20 something. I have been around working on computers since the Commodore VIC 20 and the Atari. I have a bad case of Gadgetites and will in upcoming logs will talk about some of the stuff that is out there including the iPhone, iPods and other MP3 players that is in use today. I also like free stuff that is out there on the net and will tell you what to and not to download.

Today I am writing on the issues that affects you today. Internet Explorer, which is used by a good number of you for getting on the Internet, has a big security flaw that Microsoft is ignoring for now.

This flaw has to do with using secure sites like banking or on-line shopping. The fix is switching to Firefox 3.5 and use that in place of Internet Explorer. Firefox 3.5 is the only browser that addressed this security issue and if you also use a Mac or Linux based Operating System I recommend you use Firefox 3.5 as well, because this issue is a cross platform problem. You can find Firefox at Firefox 3.5 is a free download.

For those who already use Firefox 3.5, be sure to run the updater under the “Help” tab or you may not be protected.

Firefox has a real nice companion and it is also a free download. It is called Thunderbird 2 and it will replace Outlook Express in Windows with many more features including a nice “Spam” filter. Thunderbird 2 can be found at and is available to all platforms including Windows, Mac OS 10 and the Linux Operating system.

As far as documentation or FAQ's as the industry likes to say, both are pretty easy and straight forward to run. Both Firefox 3.5 and Thunderbird will import your settings from Internet Explorer and Outlook Express during installation.

Franklin S Werren is a computer technician and runs Chautauqua Lake Hosting and Franks Radio in Sherman NY. And can be found on the web at and via e-mail at or and yes I do play the Bagpipes.
