Computer Log # 12 for January 28, 2009

In 1999 my favorite AM radio station went silent. CBC 740 had been a favorite way to listen to the news and views outside the US and a real door on the world. The FM stations, 89.1 and 99.1 that replace the old AM station did not penetrate Chautauqua County to any extent, even with my radio connected to an outside TV/FM antenna. So what was I to do? PBS Radio was not a good replacement. It left off some of my favorite programs. Well XM and Sirius radio came along and I got that and paid for both for a few years until this recession hit, and I felt since I was not in the Van as much it was not worth paying for. Now what do I do?

Listening CBC 99.1 somewhat coming back from Erie, I heard this new show called Spark!, a computer show. And I got on the website www.cbc.ca/spark and behold they had all their episodes available for download and on the iTunes store. And while poking around the CBC website, I stumbled on http://www.cbc.ca/radio and they had both streaming audio and an app you could download from iTunes App Store that will make it real easy to listen to CBC Live from any of 39 radio stations in all the Time Zones in Canada from either my iPod Touch or my iPhone in my home via wireless and the internet. I suppose I can listen on the road via the Internet from the Cell Companies. I did test it and it did work! http://www.cbc.ca/tv will let you watch some content but if you do not have a Canadian IP address you will not be able to watch very much.

These types of Apps make it real easy to enjoy the sources of news and entertainment you are interested in. More and more radio stations either standard or via the internet are coming on line with Apps so all you need to do is push one button. WNED has two apps on the iTunes Store to listen to, either 94.5 FM or 970 AM on line as well as more and more TV stations are using their “online presents” to broadcast extended news reports to you, so if you want to listen to either an extended interview of some important person or see a speech in Albany, you can now.

Sites like http://www.hulu.com for watching missed TV shows are becoming very popular. You can watch missed programs from NBC, ABC and FOX as well as short clips. http://www.cbs.com is carrying their own shows and clips and you can also watch missed shows there as well. Other sites like http://www.youtube.com are becoming popular and has been an internet favorite.

The merger of the TV and computer are becoming more apparent and with Hi-Speed internet service in most of the county why not explore the possibilities? Your new wide screen TV connected to a desktop computer next to it and the computer connected to the internet. Use a wireless keyboard and mouse for running your computer and WOW! Who needs cable except for the internet. For paid services you can use http://www.apple.com/appletv or http://www.netflix.com for your instant movie source all using your computer connected to a TV. Sooner or later you will be able to watch basic services via the internet and can pick and choose what you want.
