Computer Log #13 for February 4, 2010

Well, today I am going to talk a bit about the iPad that Apple just showed at an over-hyped press conference. According to the online pundits, who actually had their hands on it, was stated to be nothing more than an oversized iPod Touch with the same OS. Only difference is that you can have 6 favorites in the docking bar instead of 4. My concern as far as a tablet goes, is that it is not a multi-tasker but it may be a Kindle Killer for e-books. This device may be a great way to read the paper or magazine and may be the text book replacement that colleges and college students are waiting for. But time will tell. This iPad will not replace a NetBook which has multi-task and the ability to use and write Docs, spread sheets and database applications as well as your favorite programs that can run on a full size laptop or desktop. It will not have a camera built in with a swivel, or will it have a USB input or external way to connect a hard drive or other USB devices that will make it useable in some commercial areas like scanning barcodes with a camera. As some pundits put it; This iPad is nothing more than an iPod Touch on Steriods.

The iPad will be available in 60 days according to Apple, with prices starting at $499.00 for 16 gigs of ram. There will be an unlocked 3G version of the iPad but it will be open to all GSM cell phone carriers. Verizon is a CMDA carrier so the 3G iPad will not work unless you tether it to your cell phone.

Well now for the late, and promised information on tethering an iPod Touch or iPhone and yes an iPad to the Verizon Cell Phone network. The Samsung Omni Cell Phone with the Windows CE works real well. The reason is that the phone has 802.11 Wi-Fi built in just like a Laptop computer has.

You will need to first browse to http://www.wmwifirouter.com and click on the “consumer” button and download the application either via your computer or direct to the phone. This is a 21 day demo and will test the ability of your phone to use this app. You may need to install Internet Connection Software to your Cell Phone and the Omni900 series may need it. I will post the free ICS downloads at http://computerlog.chautauqualake.net and click on Computer Log 13.

Remember to read the FAQ’s and before you ask; this will work on a laptop and if you receive a call on the phone, your Internet Connection will pause, but will not disconnect you from your device. I do recommend that you plug the phone into an external power source like a cigarette lighter or the wall otherwise you will only have about 2-3 hours of battery life. Even travel buses will have a cigarette lighter on them. I used my phone on a bus trip to Buffalo and enjoyed the net all the way from Erie PA, and back. I needed my phone to call AAA to fix a flat from Erie, so keeping the cell phone battery charged was a life saver.

Today I will share another site that appears to be a hit. It combines all of the other TV sites into one easy site to look at TV shows and Movies. http://www.fancast.com will make watching missed episodes of CSI to oldies like Ironsides a great way to watch TV on your computer. And as I said before the emergence of the TV and computer is here, and can be done very easily on most widescreen TV’s.

Franklin S Werren is a computer technician and runs Chautauqua Lake Hosting and Franks Radio in Sherman NY. And can be found on the web at http://www.chautauqualake.net and via e-mail at admin@chautauqualake.net or webmaster@bagpipes.net and yes I do play the Bagpipes.
