Computer Log #15 for Feburary 18, 2010

Well the Olympics are here and are being broadcast on NBC and several of the other stations like MSNBC, USA and Bravo on satellite and cable. I also found three extra stations on my Dish Network Satellite TV with the Olympics on channels 550, 551 and 552. I do not know if Direct TV is doing the same thing. If you have an Outside TV antenna and are close to Lake Erie you may get the Olympics with a Canadian twist on CTV-TV (CFTO). This network is on Analog Channel 9 and Digital Channel 40 or 9.1. I am unsure how well the Digital channel comes in but Analog Channel 9 should be viewable in Northern Chautauqua County. Their main transmitter is on the CN Tower at 316 KW of power.

The following Websites will also have Olympic coverage,,, and As a side note you will not be able to watch videos on the CTV site. You might want to keep an eye on and, there may be some wild feeds on the net for the Olympics. Most feeds require Adobe Flash so viewing may be limited to Microsoft Windows OS’s. Keep an eye on and check out the sports section, or search for Olympics on Ustream. There are many more sites with video so keep searching on Google, you never know what you may find. If you have dial up, you will not be able to look at any videos, so sorry!

Well on to other things. Do you have someone in your family or an elderly neighbor who wrestles with a computer? Someone who was brought up in the world of Victorolas, then record players for music, telephones that had a rotary dial, and pen and paper to keep in touch with relatives. Don’t forgot the friendly tabletop radio and going to the movies at the local town or village theater and later on only three to six local TV channels and a basic TV antenna or rabbit ears. Well I have one of those in my family. How do you help them cope with all the electronics and computers? I have found that patience can be a real virtue. You may have to repeat the same instruction half a dozen times or more. If you are not right near you may get a frantic phone call to say the gadget is not working again. Some family computer geeks set up their relatives computers with remote access software to help run their computer remotely. But the best thing is to sit down beside them and be patient and help them through their problem. I have a number of customers with the same problem and I have to make a call on them to fix a glitch or bug that confounds them. Most want to just send e-mail and do a little web browsing and with the new Windows 7 coming out, they even get more confused. Some are begging me to install Windows XP just so they do not get lost. Even when the Classic Mode of Windows 7 is a bit like XP or even Windows 98 in the look and feel. Just be paitent it will work out in the end.

I will say in order to be fair in today’s Computer Log, I pay for my subscription to Dish Network even though I am a Dish Network Dealer and I have been since the Brand was first introduced. I have 2 receivers with one having Hi-Def Programming.
