Computer Log #16 for February`25, 2010

Well today I am going to talk about Googles new promotion to bring Fiber optics to the home and what it could mean to a county like Chautauqua if that happened. According to Google, they will do a community or area of about 50,000 or more households with gigabit fiber to the home. Gigibit speed will give you the ability to stream TV programming to all TV’s in the household and also gives you free radio stations from all over the world as well as computer internet speed such as using a remote server like it was sitting in the next room.

You will have the choice of telephone providers from Vonage to DFT or even Time Warner, which you have now. Telephone service will give way to Hi-Res Video conferencing at the same cost or even lower or no cost like Skype. No long distance charges ever again. This can reach every household in the county if our County submits a request to Google to get this service.

Our county could make a nice test bed for this service. I am a firm believer that the more Internet providers in a specific area the better and it will force costs down for everyone. Right now cable modems in Chautauqua County blows away DSL in speed and cost for the service.

I see fiber doing that today if it came to the county in a wide area. Verizon in the Hamburg NY area has been a great success in competing with Time Warner and DSL. Verizon is 20 Mega-Bits, Time Warner is 6-10-20 Mega-Bits and local DSL only has a maximum of 6 Mega-Bits with a usual speed of 768k to 1.5 mega-bits. Gigibit speed is something I could really use to.

You can check out the Google Fiber for Communities by going to or searching on Google for “Google Fiber”. I have personally submitted Chautauqua County as a small business but if more readers send in individually, who knows, maybe Google will pick us. We have till March 10th to submit our communities and if any government official sees this, please submit your town, village, city and our county.

Franklin S Werren is a computer technician and runs Chautauqua Lake Hosting and Franks Radio in Sherman NY. And can be found on the web at and via e-mail at or and yes I do play the Bagpipes.

Disclaimer: “Franklin S Werren” or the “Chautauqua Star” have not received any money or promotional items in anything talked about in this column.
